About Us

Route 66 the original mother road that crosses America connecting the East to the West leaving the bleak behind to seek sunshine, fortune & fame.
After 6 months on the road in America’s heartland, the South West & Tex-Mex border, Tina Lowe & Ross Waddington felt compelled by the overwhelming inspiration of their journey to begin collecting treasures of Americana for their own store to open in Melbourne. This became the Route 66 store you know and love today.

1983 was the birth of Route 66, an introduction and education to Australians to buy classic American clothing. This changed the publics view on used clothing away from the Salvo’s & St Vincent De Paul into an understanding of buying cleaned, pressed, perfect quality classics. This paved the way for an encouraged lifestyle of anti-fashion, which created a community of characters. Also through Ross’s passion for American roots music, from pre-war blues to 60’s garage, drew in more like-minded people who helped create this iconic store.

In the summer of 1988 the decision was made to branch out and open a store in Sydney providing people an outlet in which they could find true classics. Locals now could buy their vintage boots, quality denim, pomades and unique clothing on the iconic Crown St strip.

A demand for bespoke & rare clothing from their growing fan base encouraged the Route 66 team to expand into their own line of classic clothing that drew upon vintage style & designs.
Their ethos is to stay true to the timeless garments from a bygone era. This means every Route 66 piece is a classic item that transcends age, status & gender.

In October 2011 sadness shocked the community with the announcement of Ross passing. This forced the eventual closure of the Melbourne stores & warehouse. His amazing spirit will always remain through countless generations of people he has influenced.
Route 66 Sydney has taken the reigns to provide high quality items they always have and are sticking kicking ass in Darlinghurst.

Keep updated through the Mr Kick’s blog (create link for blog), Facebook (insert link) and Instagram (@route66store).

If you’re in the neighbourhood drop into the Crown St store for a Coke & a poke around! There’s always more then what’s on the site in store.

Getcha’ kicks on Route 66!

Diggin’ Melbourne, a tour guide for Vinyl lovers!

25 Mar

Not sure how we missed out on hearing about this last year… But we have come across it now and thought we better share it for those of you who also didn’t hear about Diggin’ Melbourne…

Melbourne has one of the largest number of vinyl record stores per head in the world – and now there’s a map to prove it!

Diggin’ Melbourne: a Tour Guide for Vinyl Record Lovers, a free map released last year on Australian Record Store Day (April 17), is a handy guide for LP lovers, pinpointing the location of 31 music retailers that still stock vinyl records. (Not mentioned on the map, but worth checking out are the newly opened stores: ‘Ritual’ Music and Books in North Fitzroy & Thornbury Records!)

Although considered by the mainstream industry to be an obsolete format, vinyl records continue to attract a strong cult following in Melbourne both among DJs and the music-buying public. In the inner city, a pair of vinyl turntables behind the bar is a ubiquitous fixture, while the sales of both new and second hand vinyl continue to flourish in a variety of specialist retail outlets, second hand markets and specialist record fairs.

As well as a map, Diggin’ Melbourne includes a run-down of each shop including genres and other formats stocked, contact details and opening hours. Some of this info isn’t entirely up to date as the map is a year old, but It’s still an amazing reference of record stores!

The project was conceived and pulled together by Chris Gill, owner of Northside Records in Fitzroy, with all stores contributing to costs of producing the map in the interests of promoting the Melbourne music scene.

The map is available from all participating record stores and is also available to download online at digginmelbourne.wordpress.com

While we’re on the subject of records! here are some more favorite pic’s of ours of chicks who dig vinyl! courtesy of lpcoverlover.com!

When you’re checking out number 27- the fine establishment known as GREVILLE RECORDS on the diggin’ Melbourne map, Be sure to visit us at the Route 66 garage over the road! We are still on sale this weekend! (Killer threads at a bargian price means more money for records right?)

What to expect next season! Inspriring ideas and images for our new range…

15 Mar

Things have been very busy (and exciting!) at the Route 66 Garage! We have been working on a fantastic new Autumn/Winter range of Men’s and ladies threads! We thought we would share with you some of our inspiration for the range…

Who hasn’t been inspired by Mad Men???

Set in the 1960s, in New York City, the show  follows the lives of the ruthlessly competitive men and women of Madison Avenue advertising, The series depicts the changing moods and social mores of 1960s America as well as the roles of men and women in this era while exploring the true human nature beneath the guise of 1960s traditional family values…

It’s not just the social attitudes of the show that are accurate, the shows styling, is visually stunning (and constantly inspiring!) The character’s costumes are spot on! It reminds us that the in the 60’s people really had a good time dressing…

There have been a few outfits throughout the series that have been particularly inspiring for our new range.
There are lots of cute collar details on ladies blouses and tops… We’ve designed some new must have wardrobe basic’s with tie up and ruffle details… in some killer colours and patterns to! (aqua polka dot & leopard print just to name a couple!)

A stand out Mad Men ladies garment that we adore is the (pictured above) party dress worn by Trudy in season 2. We love the contrasting top and bottom fabrics! With this in mind we have designed the very fun ‘Candy Store’ dress, It features different fabrics for the top half and skirt half of the dress, a pretty full skirt and bow detail around the waist… Cant wait for this one!

The Men in the series wear slim tailored suits and slacks. Guys, expect to see some Mad Men inspiration in the  stylish ‘Iggy’ slim Rock n’ Roll tailored trousers… we’re doing these in a classic black fabric and a rich chocolate…

Trousers are on the way for the Ladies too! We have been working on some sexy high-waisted cigarette leg pants! We’ve wanted to do these for a little while now and a lot of work has gone into these…we want the fit to be perfect! Below are some pictures we used as inspiration. Expect a fantastic high waist and comfortable skinny leg!

60’s vogue patterns Slim, bright & fun pants capris and shorts!

Joan Collins & Jayne Mansfield wear those waists high!

Star struck separates!

A pretty tame outfit by Poison Ivy standards… but still looking smokin’ hot in super high waist jeans and killer heels!

The ‘Jack’ lounge shirt will be back again! (by popular demand!) A red-hot mens item in our current range, You’ll be seeing it  in some cool new colours! We also have some great new checked fabrics and colours for new men’s western shirts!

The ‘Jack’ two tone Lounge shirt is back!

As far as fabrics go, we’ve got some wild leopard prints, pretty polka dots & gorgeous ginghams on the way!

No body wears leopard print quite like Jayne!

We’re planning to shoot our new range catalogue shortly, so exciting photos of the new gear will be posted soon! The range  is expected to arrive in store at the beginning of May. We’ll keep you up to date on all that’s happening with the range and at Route 66, so be sure to stay tuned to the blog & facebook guys & girls!
